Finalizing the regular season (minus Army-Navy), we can take a look back at RBA's performance.  RBA finished 19th out of 63 algorithms, including all six BCS computers.  I'm left looking back at what could have been.  RBA went 69% over the second half of the season and fell back into the back from a commanding position in the first half of the season.

Week 14: Saturday Predictions

The big game of the week is also going to be the closest. Both TFG and RBA see the SEC title game as a coin toss that's currently landing in favor of Auburn. Eddie and I disagree on the ACC title game as well as the Big XII title game. By the end of today we'll know the national title picture, and currently it all rests in Auburn's (and South Carolina's) hands.

Dropped out:  North Carolina, North Carolina State

I can hear readers through the wire shouting, "So, let me get this straight.  You have an undefeated SEC team at #10, the team they just beat at #4, and behind a one-loss mid-major?  Are you high or just stupid?"  Simply put, Auburn has been steadily rising, but they have played games way too closely thanks to a woefully inconsistent defense.  Meanwhile, Alabama has been playing consistent football, and as Justin noted, easily could have been winning 42-7 at the half last week.  The Alabama 28-27 final follows a 17-14 victory over Mississippi State, a 27-24 OT victory over Clemson, a 37-34 victory over Kentucky, and one touchdown victories over South Carolina and LSU.  Simply put, Auburn is quite a ways behind TCU, Oregon, and Stanford, who have been absolutely crushing everybody, especially those that they are supposed to beat.

After all that, let me say that I am eagerly cheering for Auburn to win this weekend.  I feel so dirty.

Week 14: Mid-Week Predictions

Three games before the big slew of activity on Saturday. Eddie and I are much more in agreement here, with the possible exception of tonight's Arizona/Arizona State game. TFG isn't too impressed with the Sun Devils, as they barely make the TFG top 50. RBA, however, places them just inside the top 25 and predicts that they'll be a viable threat to the Wildcats. Both teams play somewhat quickly, but aren't tremendously efficient on the offensive end. Oddly enough we disagree strongly on how good Northern Illinois is -- I have them just outside my top 25, whereas they're not even in the top half of the RBA rankings -- but we both expect them to defeat Miami-Ohio in a walk. Either way, we both expect to get roughly 2 of out 3 right.

Week 14: Top 25 -- TFG

A staggering loss with no visible effect on the rankings, an unimpressive yet tight conference title game, and why Oregon should be thanking the NCAA.

025NA Notre Dame 0.7159 0.5978 19.0 12.8 84.7

New entries: Notre Dame.

Dropped out: Clemson.

For the umpteenth week in a row, Clemson flops around the top 25.

TCU stomps New Mexico, but giving up 17 points to the fifth-worst offense in I-A football means their defensive efficiency takes a hit.  Boise State lost a close one to Nevada -- although there's some speculation that the first field goal was actually good -- but by virtue of losing a close one to a decent team, Boise doesn't drop too much in the eyes of my computer. Ohio State thumped an overmatched Michigan team, and Alabama held a high-powered Auburn team to only 28 points; the downside is that Alabama only scored 27, thanks to some notable turnovers in the red zone, along with some issues punching the ball into the end zone. Auburn was lucky they weren't down 42-7 at the half.

Virginia Tech seems to have recovered from their early-season issues and is the class of the ACC; they'll face Florida State in the ACC title game, but TFG pegs the Hokies as the favorites. Oregon has one last shot to really convince TFG that they've got a respectable defense, but given their possible matchup with Auburn in the title game that won't matter as much; the Ducks will be the favorites.

Further down the rankings we see a block of SEC teams. (13) Auburn and (14) South Carolina will face off in the SEC title game, in a contest TFG expects to be too close to call.  A mere 0.0046 points separates the Tigers from the Gamecocks, and Steve Spurrier would love to become the first coach to take two teams to the top of the SEC. Arkansas, however, is pulling for Auburn to win, since the Tigers in the National Championship game means the Razorbacks get the SEC spot in the BCS.

The Cam Newton decision from the NCAA clears the way for the Auburn quarterback to lead the Tigers against South Carolina this weekend. Without Newton it would be an uphill battle for Auburn, and likely lead to the Gamecocks winning the game. That would place the BCS voters in the position of having to choose between

  • an undefeated TCU team;
  • a 1-loss Stanford team in a Pac-10 rematch;
  • a 1-loss Wisconsin team; or
  • a 1-loss Auburn team

to play Oregon in the National Championship game. Auburn would have been a 1-loss team without their star player, and Stanford already had their shot at Oregon. TCU is currently the #3 team in the BCS and likely to jump to the #2 spot if Auburn had lost Newton OR if South Carolina pulls off the upset. If TCU ends up in the title game instead of Auburn, Oregon goes from being a 62% favorite to a 30% underdog. So for all the Ducks (and Arkansas) fans out there, send a thank-you note to the NCAA and cheer for those Tigers!

P.S. Notre Dame? Really? Must be a bug of some sort ....

Week 13: Saturday Predictions

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday we won't have a detailed breakdown of the interesting games, just a set of predictions. Eddie and I disagree about many of these games: 9 out of 38. In short, this should (continue to) be a crazy week for college football.

I expect to get 26.5 out of 38, Eddie expects to get 26.8 right.

TCU remains the clear number 1, although Boise State gains ground after pummeling a hapless Fresno State team. Since we only consider games again I-A opponents, Alabama effectively had a bye week here, while Ohio State snuck by a good Iowa team. From there we see a huge drop-off (around 500 points) to (5) Virginia Tech. The Hokies continue to perform well, even after flubbing a home game against JMU early in the season. (6) Oregon had a bye week and remains in a virtual tie with Virginia Tech for the title of "best of the rest".

For the second year in a row TFG continues to give love to (7) Oklahoma, even as the human pollsters rate the Sooners out of the top 10. (8) LSU survived a scare against Mississippi, but drops a full 1.1 PPH on the defensive efficiency side. (9) Iowa gave the Buckeyes all they could handle but couldn't pull off the win, even with home field advantage. The Hawkeyes will end up being the 7-4 team that no one wants to play in a bowl game. Florida continues to hang around the top 10 because no one else is really stepping up to bridge the gap, although (11) Stanford is certainly trying.

Clemson re-appears in the top 25 yet again. I can only assume they plan to lose this week.

The big game of the week, National-Championship-wise is clearly going to be the Auburn-Alabama game. TFG isn't big on (12) Auburn's chances again the (3) Crimson Tide, due in large part of Alabama's defense. Auburn has played some good defenses so far this year -- namely (8) LSU and (25) Clemson -- and been held below 30 points in both games. Alabama's defense is even better, and the Tigers don't have home field advantage in this one. Auburn's defense is somewhat suspect at this point (tied for 19th in the top 25) and Alabama's offense is nearly as efficient as Auburn's. Even assuming that Auburn manages to win at Alabama -- roughly a 1-in-4 prospect -- they still have to play (14) South Carolina in the SEC title game. The Tigers will be the favorites, but just barely. Expect that game to be a coin toss. TFG pegs Auburn as having a 1-in-7 shot in escaping both games with a win, but a 1-in-3 shot of coming out with two losses.

(6) Oregon has a slightly easier road against (22) Arizona and (33) Oregon State, but should Auburn lose -- and TFG expects they will -- that opens the door to a multitude of scenarios.  Will the door open for a 1-loss Wisconsin team? The current BCS rankings have TCU third and Boise State fourth; will either of these teams get a shot?

With nearly 84% probability, TFG says we'll be answering these questions in the next two weeks. Stay tuned.
